South Africa beat India in the first test match by an innings and 6 runs with a day to spare. The match was played at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur. Graeme Smith won the toss and chose to bat first in the first test. The decision to bat first appeared to have backfired as they lost both their openers for just 6 runs on the board. But Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla took the repair work on their shoulders and ended the first day 291/2 with Kallis scoring an unbeaten 150 odd runs and Amla an unbeaten century. Kallis who hasn't scored a double century in his test career fell short again and departed for 173. Amla continued the onslaught and scored his highest test score of 253*(473). AB de Villiers chipped in with 53 and Boucher with 39 runs. South Africa declared their first innings at 558/6.
In reply, India witnessed great conventional swing bowling by the South Africans. Dale Steyn picked up 7 wickets for just 51 runs and India were all out for 233 runs. Other than Virender Sehwag who scored 109(139) and debutant Subramaniam Badrinath 56(139), none of the other Indian batsmen were able to post double digits in the scoreboard. South Africa enforced the follow-on and picked up both Gambhir and Sehwag by end of day on Day 3.
Trailing by 259 runs, India resumed the second innings on Day 4 with Sachin Tendulkar and Murali Vijay on crease. Tendulkar scored his 46th test century, but fell soon after. At the end South Africa won by an innings and 6 runs with a day to spare and leads the two test series 1-0. This is Mahendra Singh Dhoni's first loss in a test as a captain. With only one test remaining, India has to win the second test to level the series and remain at the top spot in the ICC Test rankings.

India are all out for 319 in their second innings. South Africa won the first test by an innings and 6 runs. Sachin Tendulkar scored his 46th test century.
A stunning Dale Steyn picked up 7 wickets as India were all out for 233 in their first innings. He picked up two wickets in the morning session with conventional swing, but the real damange to the Indian batting occured in the second session as Steyn picked up 5 wickets giving just one run in 3.4 overs in a spell. Other than Virender Sehwag 109(139) and Badrinath 56(139), none of the Indian batsmen were able to post double digits on the scoreboard. Dale Steyn picked up 7 wickets for 52 and Morkel, Harris and Parnell picked up a wicket each to force India to follow-on. The second innings wasn't too good for India as they lost the openers by the end of the day. Gambhir was out for 1 and Sehwag departed for 16 in his second innings. With two days remaining, it would require a monumental effort from the rest of Indian batsmen to save the test, but that is highly unlikely.
Day 2 Stumps: South Africa declared their first innings at 558/6. Hashim Amla scored his first double century and remained unbeaten. In reply, India are 25 for no loss at stumps on Day 2.
