India won the toss and chose to bat first. However, Dhoni's decision to bat first soon backfired as India lost the top order very quickly. Openers Gautam Gambhir 1(10) and Virender Sehwag 16(11) were out before the end of seventh over in the innings. Sachin Tendulkar is gone for 4 runs and VVS Laxman is out for a duck. Day 3: Sri Lanka are 165 runs ahead in the first innings of the first test match at stumps on Day 3. Mahela Jayawardene has scored his 6th double century in test matches and his second against India.
Day 4: Prasanna Jayawardene hit his second test century and Sri Lanka is past the 200 lead in the first innings. Sri Lanka declare for 760/7 with a lead of 334 runs. India are 190/2 at stumps on Day 4 trailing by 144 runs with 8 wickets in hand.
Day 5: Gautam Gambhir scored a century as India trail by 78 runs with 7 wickets in hand at lunch on the final day. Sachin hit his 43rd test century as the match ended in a draw
