New Zealand defeated 
Pakistan in the second semifinal of the ICC Champions Trophy 2009 at Johannesburg on October 3. New Zealand will now play Australia in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2009 on October 5 at Centurion. Australia beat England by 9 wickets in the first semifinal.
Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first. New Zealand started off well and has taken the first 4 wickets for 86 runs on the board. A tight bowling by Daniel Vettori and Ian Butler in the middle helped New Zealand lower the Pakistan runrate. Yousuf Youhana and Umar Akmal added 80 runs for the fifth wicket before Youhana departed for 45(78). Akmal soon went out for 55. An unbeaten 35 runs for the last wicket has helped Pakistan score 233/9 in their 50 overs. Ian Butler finished with his career best figures of 4/44 and Vettori took 3/43. In reply, New Zealand got off to a good start. Brendon McCullum showed his intent when he hit a six to Mohammad Aamer in the second ball of the first over. However he was out for 17 in the fifth over of the innings. Grant Elliott scored an unbeaten 75*(103) and Daniel Vettori at the end scored 41(42) to help New Zealand win the match. They took runs at regular intervals and didn't go for big shots. However, New Zealand scored 55 runs in the Battnig Powerplay.

New Zealand finished toppers in Group B. They lost to South Africa in their first match, beat Sri Lanka by 38 runs and beat England by 4 wickets in their final round robin match.
Pakistan finished second in Group A. They won their first match against West Indies by 5 wickets. In the second match, they played against India and won the match by 54 runs. In the final match, they were restricted to 205 in their 50 overs against Australia. Australia were going on well at 140/2 but Pakistan rallied back to take 6 quick wickets. However, in the end, Australia managed to win the match off the last ball of the over.
