Somerset Sabres defeated Deccan Chargers in the Group A match of the Champions League Twenty20 2009. Somerset won the toss and opted to field first. Deccan Chargers got off to a good start. Adam Gilchrist scored 18 from just 8 balls and was the first to depart. VVS Laxman was the top scorer with 46 runs from 35 balls. Quick wickets in the middle pegged the Deccan Chargers run rate and they finished for 153/9 in their 20 overs. In reply, Somerset started off well but lost Trescothick in the second over. Justin Langer and Zander de Bruyn scored well for the second wicket. But RP Singh got 2 wickets in the sixth over of the innings and Deccan Chargers are back in the game. Somerset are 99/7 at one stage, but a James Hildreth and Alfonso Thomas scored 50 runs for the eighth wicket and was right back in the game. Somerset required 5 runs in the final over and Scott Styris was given the ball to bowl the final over. He got 2 wickets in the first three balls, but Alfonso Thomas hit a couple of fours to win the match for Somerset Sabres.
