England broke the partnership early with Haddin caught by Paul Collingwood off the bowling of Andrew Flintoff. Flintoff then got the wickets of Nathan Hauritz and Peter Siddle to claim his first Lord's five-wicket-haul, on his final Lord's appearance as a Test player. With one wicket needed to win, Mitchell Johnson aggressively powered to 61 before Graeme Swann clean bowled Johnson to wrap up the Test victory at 12:42pm. Andrew Flintoff picked up 5 wickets for 92 runs to give England their first win against Australia at the Lord's. However, after this brilliant performance he didn't have any thoughts of un-retiring. He was chosen the Man of the Match and England leads 1-0 in the Ashes 2009 series.
Ricky Ponting quotes
"We've always enjoyed playing here, we've had a very proud record here. We were outplayed right through the course of the game, England have been the better team. We've got to bounce back pretty quickly."
"I'm pretty proud of the way we fought the game out. Our bowling in the second innings was as good as it's been through the series. But after lunch on day one we were."
On the umpiring- "It's all irrelevant. We've been beaten by over 100 runs in a Test."
Andrew Strauss quotes
"It's been a really special victory. To win an Ashes Test match at Lord's is something that plenty of guys have dreamed about over the last 50 or 60 years. We're not going to get carried away, there's plenty of time left in the series."
On Kevin Pietersen - "Our medical team will be monitoring him over the coming days but we're still confident of having a fit squad to pick from for the third Test,"

July 16, 2009 - England started the day with the news that allrounder Andrew Flintoff was going to retire from Test Cricket after the 2009 Ashes. England made just one change in the squad, dropping Monty Panesar in favor of Graham Onions. Steve Harmison who has been selected in the squad for the second test match was left out of the squad.
England won the toss and chose to bat first, and they started exceptionally well as they reached 126/0 at lunch on Day 1. Australian spinner Nathan Hauritz was hit back by Andrew Strauss and he had to leave the ground to the hospital with a dislocated finger. England continued tormenting the Australian bowling attack pre-lunch, but Mitchell Johnson gave the first break for Australia as he sent Alastair Cook back to the pavilion on 95. England lost Ravi Bopara for 18 and they started to collapse. Andrew Strauss however played sensibly at the other end and by the end of Day 1 he remained unbeaten on 161 as England reached 364/6 at stumps.
