England vs Australia - Ashes 2009 First Test - Day 2

Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, UK
July 09, 2009

Simon Katich scored his maiden Ashes century and Ricky Ponting his 38th test century as Australia reached 249/1 at stumps on Day 2. The duo of Katich and Ponting kept England at bay with their unbeaten parnership worth 189 runs.

Earlier Graeme Swann's unbeaten 47 off 40 balls helped England score 435 runs in their first innings. Australia started off well facing eight iovers before lunch without losing a wicket. But Flntoff, the fastest bowler in the match so far captured the wicket of Hughes to give the first break for England. Ponting who joined Katich at the crease batted sensibly and by the end of the day, both batsmen had scored centuries with Katich scoring his first test century against England. Ricky Ponting joined Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Allan Border to have scored more than 11,000 runs in test cricket.

Graeme Swann quotes
"We couldn't capitalise on the runs we made and that was disappointing"
"It was good for me to go out there and bat. I like to smash it, that's the way I like to play. Jimmy played like Brian Lara for an hour or so which was great to watch"
